The Federal Government has approved a 1.1 billion naira contract for
the purchase of two modern locomotives for the Abuja-Kaduna standard
gauge rail line now under construction.
Minister of Transport, Mr Idris
Umar, said this while briefing State House correspondents after the
weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President
Goodluck Jonathan.
Umar said the locomotives will be used for mass
transit services on the Abuja-Kaduna standard gauge rail line, which is
expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The minister
said that the Federal Government would place orders for more locomotives
in 2015 as part of efforts to modernise the country’s rail transport
system.
