The president said this at a church service at National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to mark Nigeria’s 54th Independence Anniversary. He said the country defeated Ebola because Nigerians united against it irrespective of political persuasion, religion or ethnic origin. The president called for unity among Nigerians, saying there is no challenge that can withstand the force of a united Nigeria.
In his sermon, President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Ayo Oristejafor said most of the challenges confronting Nigeria are self-inflicted. He said corruption and terrorism, which he described as the greatest problems facing the country were created by greedy politicians and extreme religious ideologists. According to him, corruption is fed by greed, which in turn is rooted in poverty mentality. Pastor Oristejafor opposed the school of thought that terrorism was caused by poverty saying it is caused by extreme religious ideology.
