During a late-night TV show appearance, Russian Tennis Federation
President and member of the International Olympic Committee Shamil
Tarpischev referred to the World number one Serena Williams and her
sisters as the “Williams brothers” and “frightening to look at.”
Serena
responded saying, ‘I thought they were very insensitive and extremely
sexist as well as racist at the same time. I thought they were, in a
way, bullying. I just wasn’t very happy with his comments. I think a lot
of people weren’t happy as well.’
While the Women’s Tennis
Association took immediate action and as a result, Tarpischev was
suspended for one year and levied a $25,000 fine, the maximum allowed.
